Start Where You Are

People tend to think that life progresses something like this: we're born, we have a happy childhood, we graduate high school, we attend college, we get the dream job, then we get married and start a family. This isn't exactly how it goes for all of us, though. We may follow these steps out of order, or skip some altogether. It doesn't mean we did something wrong; it just means we took a different path. If this sounds like you, you're in good company here! So for my very first post, I want to share a little about myself and how I got here.

I was a young EMT and single mom to two kids when I met the man who would become my husband. I went to work each day ready to run head-first into whatever challenging situation that shift might bring. It was great, and I truly loved it. But after we got married and started expanding our family, I longed to stay home with our kids. I became a stay-at-home-mom and never looked back.

After our family went through the tragic loss of our daughter in 2015, I needed something to focus on. My husband and our other kids were the rock that I clung to, but I needed something else. It was then that I discovered natural living and started making lifestyle changes. We got into gardening, and my husband and I spent many hours together caring for our plant babies.

I decided that I wanted to go back to college and get my degree, so I enrolled in an online program in the fall of 2018. It was early on in my newfound school career that I developed my passion for writing. Suddenly, after so many years, I finally knew what I wanted to do when I "grew up." I wanted to share all I know through writing, and so The Butterbean Legacy began to take shape. Visit the "About" tab to learn where the name Butterbean comes from.

You'll be able to find posts here on natural living, such as using herbs and essential oils to treat common conditions. I'll share how to make herb-infused oils, herbal tinctures, and homemade soap. I'll tell you all about my favorite herbs and how to use them.

I have an obsession with vintage things, and I love repurposing anything I can. I'll walk you through some of the things we've made with our thrift or antique store finds, and show you how we turned other people's junk into something totally useful for us. You'll get some awesome information on things I've sewn for our household, too.

You can expect some recipes and meal ideas. I am not a "by-the-book" cook, and I don't use many recipes, but I do have an arsenal of quick dinner ideas that I can't wait to share with other busy families. I'll also share tips on how we are able to feed our large family on a budget.

You can look forward to all this and so much more from TBL. My vision is to include a variety of posts that will help you make inspired changes in your own life, for you and your family. I can't wait to share my thoughts with you, and hear all about yours. I'm excited for this journey; thank you for joining me!
